With record levels of political mail and the holiday mailing season started, new data shows physical mail remains a valuable asset in an increasingly digitized world.

As the 2026 midterms fade and the holidays loom, mailboxes across America are emerging as an essential marketing avenue. From political campaign materials to holiday cards and retail catalogs, businesses and groups are using physical mail to reach people in a more tactile, memorable way.

A new industry data reveals internet advertising is still important, but direct mail delivers something that is growing more and more valuable: real engagement.

Political Mail Reaches Historic Levels

The 2026 election cycle has demonstrated that physical mail is important for reaching voters.

Reuters reported that in the two months before the November election, the United States Postal Service handled a record 4.2 billion pieces of political marketing mail. That’s about 300 million more pieces than the 2024 election cycle.

The data reveal that even as digital political advertising expands, campaigns still rely on mail to convey messages directly into homes.

This translates into production reliability, consistent quality and the capacity to support high-volume campaigns for commercial printers, mail service providers and envelope makers.

Holiday Cards and Catalogs Open New Opportunities

Once the election mailings are complete, the industry enters another huge season: the holiday mailing season.

Retailers send out catalogs, promotional deals and seasonal announcements. Businesses and families begin mailing holiday cards.

USPS has released their recommended 2026 Christmas sending dates and is encouraging customers to prepare ahead for delivery by December.

Catalogues remain especially useful to retailers wanting to distinguish themselves during busy shopping times. Unlike the fleeting nature of digital marketing, printed catalogs are a tangible item buyers can thumb through, refer back to and share.

The USPS has also rolled out promotional incentives that encourage firms to invest in focused and recurrent mail campaigns, a testament to the channel’s enduring value.

Direct Mail Gets Engagements That Digital Marketing Can’t Always Get

Every day, consumers are assaulted with innumerable e-mails, advertising and promotional text messages. These routes are quick and convenient, but the digital overload gives traditional mail a chance to shine.

According to Lob’s 2026 Direct Mail Consumer Insights Report:

  • 89%** of consumers feel that relevant direct mail motivates them to take action.
  • 87%** open their mail the same day they get it.
  • 79%** took digital action after receiving direct mail.
  • 65% claim they have bought, joined up or became a customer due to direct mail.

The findings suggest that physical mail can be a complimentary technique to digital marketing and can produce quantitative engagement.

A Bigger Bang for Your Marketing Buck

Direct mail also can give a significant return, particularly when campaigns are focused on targeted audiences, relevant messaging and excellent production.

The Association of National Advertisers’ Response Rate Report revealed a solid performance for direct mail, particularly when addressing current customers. But the real ROI is dependent upon the campaign, the audience and the cost of producing.

Rather than replacing email or text marketing, firms may blend direct mail with digital platforms to provide many points of engagement for clients.

Quality Mail Still Matters

This newfound focus on physical mail provides an opportunity for mail service providers and high-volume producers to run efficient and enduring campaigns.
